William, you haven't been working lately and I've missed seeing you. I walk by the bike shop window sometimes, just to see if you're there. I love seeing you in that dirty tank top you wear everyday. I'd like to get to know you and maybe go out for a coffee some time. What are your favorite books, movies, music? I've been into indie movies lately, and I think I might've seen you in one. Who knows... Point is, I miss you. I miss that musky smell you have after working all day. I miss that huge smile you get when you're telling about one of your interesting adventures. I hope you see this and respond. I'd like to see what else lies under those suspenders... ;)

Trek Transport Can Change Your Life

You might remember last year when we ran a contest for the Trek Transport. Well, only 1 person rode it and they didn't really carry anything. But now that we're having such beautiful weather we're going to give you another chance. Check out this video and imagine yourself changing the world:

Wanna Buy Some Speed?

That's the Bontrager Aura 5 wheelset; an aluminum rim with a carbon foil weighing in at 1740 grams. Now, I'm not a racer and this ain't VeloNews. This is the first set of carbon wheels I've ridden and I don't have any other wheel sets to compare. But even though I'm not racing it doesn't mean that I don't like to go fast and I know that the easiest way to go faster is through a better wheel set.

My normal wheels are Velocity Deep-V's with Velocity Road Hubs and 1.8 spokes. I really like them; they are not very heavy and still durable. I originally wanted to run B43's but they were not available with a machined side wall; aesthetically I like the deeper profile rim. The only downside to the Velocity's is their lack of stiffness. I notice regularly that when I stand up and start really pushing my computer magnet clips the sensor so I back off a little bit.

The Aura's are noticeably stiffer and that translates to a 2-3 mile per hour increase in speed. It's like I'm going faster without even trying.

So how much is this whole bag of speed going to cost? For the average commuter it will be difficult to justify the $1200 price tag, especially for something carbon fiber. For the beginner racer that's skirting carbon fiber bike prices but not quite there. For this type of increase in speed I would put the Aura 5's on an aluminum frame before I upgraded to a carbon frame. A team racer who already has the carbon bike with a basic aluminum wheel set upgrading here is a no-brainer.

How Much Can You Transport?

The Trek Transport is the kind of bike that most people see and say, "What kind of bike is that!?" My response: "Awesome. That is an awesome kind of bike." And then I go on to list all of the places where I would use the Transport: the grocery store/farmers market, hardware store, barbecues... Heck, I could even put my girl on the back and go have a picnic! Just look at this thing:


So even though I can imagine myself using this bike I don't think other people can, so this is where you get to help. I'm going to let you ride the Transport so you can help me show everyone what this bike is capable of.

Now I don't want you to go out and and try to test the limits because if you break the bike, you buy it. But don't be scared. The Transport is rated to carry 300 lbs of rider weight plus 220 lbs of cargo weight. The cargo weight breaks down like this: 20 lbs on the front rack, 100 on the back and 50 on each side load rack. And that doesn't mean that if you weigh less than 300 lbs you can use the difference in cargo. But I know you wouldn't try that anyhow.

To reserve the Transport send an email to cort@peddlerbikeshop.com. You'll be able to use the bike for one day. You will of course have to fill out a Rental Agreement but there won't be a rental charge.

You will also have to take a picture of your cargo and send it to me at the above email address. I'll post the picture on the blog and each month the person with the most awkward haul will be rewarded. As if using the Transport for free isn't enough of a reward. Sheesh! You guys and gals sure ask a lot!
